2nd Annual Race Relations in Advertising
212NYC is dedicated to keeping the conversation about race relations in our industry at the forefront. We revisited our earlier conversation from a year ago -- bringing back the topic of race relations in ad land with some of the great talent we heard from last time, and are bringing in new voices as well.
Thank you to the speakers for gifting us with their time, POV and knowledge on this topic: Steffon Isaac, Keni Thacker, Sheryl Goldstein, Monique Braham-Evans, Robecta Ma, Shayna Walker, MS, Deborah T. Owens
Some key takeaways as summarized by 212NYC member, Jessalin Lam:
💡 We need to keep people accountable to have consequences for actions
💡 Correct people when they say your name wrong. Do not conform to what is easy for others.
💡 Own your identity and encourage your community to be confident in sharing their narratives. Empower people to say something.
💡 There has been a lack of progress the past year for organizations moving the needle forward. There are more plans with a lack of action.
💡 The Great Resignation is real and there is an increase war on talent
💡 You do not need to recreate the wheel. Have accountability on the top tied to compensation being at stake for leaders. We need a new leadership competency.
💡 Get managers to make sure their teams feel like they belong. Build diverse teams as a competency for your employees.
💡 Rather than hiring on experience, hire based on potential
💡 Use your power and influence to help others as an ally and leader
💡 Do not be blind to the experiences of others. Understand with a level of empathy.
💡 Analyze your data and take actions based on DEI results. Some examples of success metrics to observe are attrition, retention, pay equity, how people move through the organization, accountability at the executive level, recruitment goals, etc
